The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) should look into Microsoft and hold them accountable for what U.S. Senator Ron Wyden described as egregious cybersecurity carelessness that allowed ransomware assaults on important infrastructure in the United States, including hospital networks.
In a four-page letter to FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Wyden compared Redmond to a “arsonist selling firefighting services to their victims,” arguing that Microsoft’s culture of careless cybersecurity and its de facto monopoly of the enterprise operating system market pose a serious national security threat and make more hacks inevitable if prompt action is not taken.
This comes after Wyden’s office received fresh data from Ascension, a healthcare provider that was hit by a devastating ransomware attack last year that stole the personal and medical data of about 5.6 million people.
