Amnesty Finds Cellebrite’s Zero-Day Used to Unlock Serbian Activist’s Android Phone

According to a recent Amnesty International investigation, a zero-day exploit created by Cellebrite was used to unlock the Android phone of a 23-year-old youth activist from Serbia. According to the international non-governmental organization Cellebrite, a sophisticated zero-day exploit chain that targeted Android USB drivers was used to exploit and unlock the Android phone of one student protester. Traces of the exploit were found in a different case in the middle of 2024. This vulnerability is CVE-2024-53104 (CVSS score: 7.8), which is a case of privilege escalation in the USB Video Class (UVC) driver, a kernel component.
