Hacker hijacks Orange Spain RIPE account to cause BGP havoc
Orange Spain experienced an internet outage today as a result of a hacker exploiting the company's RIPE account to set up an RPKI and BGP routing incorrectly.
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) manages internet traffic routing. It enables businesses to link their IP addresses to autonomous system (AS) numbers and promote those numbers to other routers they are connected to, or their peers.
Networks are able to determine the optimal path for sending traffic to a specific IP address thanks to the routing table that these BGP advertisements generate and spread to all other edge routers on the internet.
