FBI links cybercriminals to sharp surge in cargo theft attacks

The transportation and logistics sector was alerted by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to a substantial increase in cyber-enabled cargo theft, with losses in the US and Canada expected to reach around $725 million in 2025. This is a 60% increase in losses over the prior year, driven by the growing use of hacking and impersonation by criminals to steal valuable cargo. Due to more selective targeting of high-value shipments, the average value per theft increased by 36% to $273,990 last year alone, while confirmed cargo theft instances increased by 18%.
