TheMoon Botnet Resurfaces,Exploiting EoL Devices to Power Criminal Proxy

End-of-life (EoL) small home/small office (SOHO) routers and IoT devices have been reported to be enslaved by a botnet that was previously thought to be rendered inert, enabling Faceless, a criminal proxy service, to operate. The Black Lotus Labs team at Lumen Technologies stated that TheMoon, which first appeared in 2014, has been running quietly while expanding to over 40,000 bots from 88 nations in January and February of 2024. In April 2023, security journalist Brian Krebs provided details about Faceless, a malicious residential proxy service that charges other threat actors a little fee—less than $1 per day—for its anonymity services.
