On June 22, President Trump issued an executive order imposing strict deadlines on government agencies to switch to post-quantum cryptography for high-value assets and high-impact systems. Digital signatures must be completed by December 31, 2031, and key establishment must be completed by December 31, 2030. National security systems are left on a different path under EO 14409. The deadlines are important because there is a threat that does not currently require a functional quantum computer. The vulnerability is known as "harvest now, decrypt later" because adversaries can gather encrypted U.S. data now and decrypt it later once a large-scale quantum machine is in place.
