Google disputes false claims of massive Gmail data breach
Following spectacular news reports of a fictitious hack that allegedly exposed 183 million accounts, Google was once again compelled to declare that it had not experienced a data breach.
News reports stating that millions of Gmail accounts were compromised started to surface over the weekend and continued into today. According to some publications, the entire 183 million accounts were compromised.
Gmail did not experience a breach, the company clarified in a series of articles on Monday, and the compromised accounts were instead a collection of credentials that had been acquired over the years by information-stealing malware and other attacks.
