Fake ‘Inflation Refund’ texts target New Yorkers in new scam
The Department of Taxation and Finance is pretending to give "Inflation Refunds" in a persistent smishing operation that targets New Yorkers with text texts in an effort to steal their financial and personal information.
In order to assist mitigate the consequences of inflation, New York State launched the Inflation Refund program, which automatically issues refund checks to qualified residents.
Taxpayers who filed a return, fulfill specific income requirements, and were not listed as dependents by another filer are among those who are eligible. Checks are automatically delivered to eligible taxpayers in New York; no application, registration, or personal information is required.
