Ex-Engineer Charged in Missouri for Failed $750,000 Bitcoin Extortion Attempt
A 57-year-old man from Missouri, in the United States, has been taken into custody in relation to an unsuccessful data extortion scheme that was directed towards his previous employer.
One case of intentional damage to a protected computer, one count of extortion related to a threat to cause harm to a protected computer, and one count of wire fraud have been brought against Daniel Rhyne of Kansas City, Missouri.
On August 27, 2024, he was taken into custody in the state after attempting to extract money from an unidentified industrial corporation with its headquarters located in Somerset County, New Jersey, where he worked as a core infrastructure engineer.
