New NKAbuse Malware Exploits NKN Blockchain Tech for DDoS Attacks

NKN, short for New Kind of Network, is a decentralized, peer-to-peer network connectivity protocol that has been used as a communications channel by NKAbuse, a novel multi-platform threat. According to a report released on Thursday by the Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, "the malware uses NKN technology for data exchange between peers, functioning as a potent implant, and equipped with both flooder and backdoor capabilities." NKN is a "software overlay network built on top of today's Internet that enables users to share unused bandwidth and earn token rewards." It boasts more than 62,000 nodes.
