Genetic data site openSNP to close and delete data over privacy concerns
Due to privacy concerns and the possibility of abuse by totalitarian governments, the openSNP project, a platform for exchanging genomic and phenotypic data, will close on April 30, 2025, and remove all user inputs.
Co-founder Bastian Greshake Tzovaras made the announcement earlier this week, voicing concerns about the fundamental changes in the industry over the past 14 years and the current exploitation of personal genetic data.
For research and educational reasons, people can upload and share their genomic and phenotypic data on the free and open-source OpenSNP platform.
