New Spectre Style ‘Pathfinder’ Attack Targets Intel CPU, Leak Encryption Keys and Data
Researchers have uncovered two brand-new attack techniques that target high-performance Intel CPUs that might be used to launch an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm key recovery attack.
A team of researchers from Google, Purdue University, UNC Chapel Hill, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of California, San Diego have jointly termed the methods Pathfinder.
Attackers can perform two primary sorts of attacks using Pathfinder: reconstructing the history of program control flow and initiating high-resolution Spectre attacks. Pathfinder gives attackers access to read and modify important components of the branch predictor. The paper's lead author, Hosein Yavarzadeh, said in a statement provided to The Hacker News.
