OVHcloud Hit with Record 840 Million PPS DDoS Attack Using MikroTik Routers

A record-breaking distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that reached a packet rate of 840 million packets per second (Mpps) was mitigated, according to French cloud computing company OVHcloud, in April 2024. This is little more than the previous high of 809 million Mpps that Akamai claimed to have targeted a major European bank in June 2020. According to reports, the 840 Mpps DDoS attack was a result of a DNS reflection attack that used roughly 15,000 DNS servers to boost traffic, combined with a TCP ACK flood that started from 5,000 source IPs.
