New ZenHammer Attack Bypasses RowHammer Defenses on AMD CPUs

For the first time, ETH Zurich cybersecurity researchers have created a new version of the RowHammer DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) attack that is effective against AMD Zen 2 and Zen 3 systems even in the face of mitigations like Target Row Refresh (TRR). Considering that AMD currently holds a roughly 36% market share for x86 desktop CPUs, the researchers concluded that this data demonstrates that AMD systems are just as susceptible to Rowhammer attacks as Intel systems. This significantly expands the attack surface. The method, called ZenHammer, can also cause bit flips of the RowHammer on DDR5 chips for the first time.
