New WailingCrab Malware Loader Spreading via Shipping-Themed Emails
Email messages with shipping and delivery themes are being used to spread the dangerous malware loader WailingCrab.
According to IBM X-Force researchers Charlotte Hammond, Ole Villadsen, and Kat Metrick, "the malware itself is split into multiple components, including a loader, injector, downloader, and backdoor, and successful requests to C2-controlled servers are often necessary to retrieve the next stage."
Proofpoint published the first report on WailingCrab, also known as WikiLoader, in August 2023. The report described campaigns aimed at Italian organizations that ultimately used the malware to spread the Ursnif (also known as Gozi) trojan.
