Chinese Hacker Xu Zewei Arrested for Ties to Silk Typhoon Group and U.S. Cyber Attacks
A Chinese individual was detained in Milan, Italy, on suspicion of having ties to Silk Typhoon, a state-sponsored hacker collective, and of conducting cyberattacks against government and business institutions in the United States.
In addition to aggravated identity theft, Xu Zewei, 33, is accused of nine charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to harm and get information by gaining unauthorized access to secured computers. Italian media were the first to report on the arrest's specifics.
From February 2020 to June 2021, Xu is accused of being involved in a series of computer intrusions in the United States, including a huge attack spree that took use of then-zero-day vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server, a cluster of activity the Windows manufacturer named Hafnium.
