Poland busts SIM-swapping gang tied to millions in crypto theft
Four members of an organized cybercrime ring have been detained by Polish authorities on suspicion of breaking into telecom partners and using email accounts to launch SIM-swapping assaults.
With assistance from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in the United States, the Polish Cybercrime Bureau (CBZC) conducted the operation.
Investigators claim that the suspects utilized sophisticated cyberattacks to steal information needed for SIM-swapping assaults.
They took over victims' phone numbers, eavesdropped on emails and SMS messages, and eventually took over cryptocurrency exchange accounts. Millions of dollars are thought to have been pilfered in this manner and subsequently laundered through a dispersed banking network.
