Malware Attack Targets World Uyghur Congress Leaders via Trojanized UyghurEdit++ Tool
A Windows-based spyware that may conduct surveillance has targeted top members of the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) who are living in exile in a new campaign discovered in March 2025.
A trojanized version of UyghurEdit++, a genuine open-source word processing and spell-checking program designed to facilitate the usage of the Uyghur language, was used in the spear-phishing effort.
In a report released on Monday, the Citizen Lab stated that although the virus itself was not very sophisticated, its delivery was highly tailored to the target population, and technical artifacts indicate that campaign-related activities started at least in May 2024.
