CTM360 Exposes a Global WhatsApp Hijacking Campaign
Through a network of fraudulent authentication portals and impersonation pages, CTM360 has discovered a fast growing WhatsApp account-hacking effort that targets users globally. The effort, internally known as HackOnChat, takes advantage of WhatsApp's well-known web interface by tricking users into compromising their accounts through social engineering techniques.
Investigators found thousands of malicious URLs that were quickly created using contemporary website-building systems and placed on low-cost top-level domains, enabling attackers to quickly launch new pages. Hundreds of instances have occurred in recent weeks, with a discernible increase throughout the Middle East and Asia, according to the campaign's activity records.
