China-developed apps including RedNote (also known as Xiaohongshu), Weibo, TikTok, WeChat, and Baidu Cloud have raised security concerns, according to Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB), because of their extensive data collecting and transfer to China.
The warning follows an examination of these applications conducted in collaboration with the National Police Agency’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) and Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MJIB).
According to the NSB, the findings show that there are security problems, such as excessive data collecting and privacy violations. It is recommended that the public use caution when selecting mobile applications.
According to the government, it assessed the apps using 15 signs that fell into five main categories: biometric data access, data transmission and sharing, excessive permission usage, system information extraction, and personal data collecting.
