The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on a cybercrime network that includes three Chinese citizens and three firms based in Thailand. The network is connected to a vast botnet that manages the “911 S5” home proxy service.
Nearly two years ago, in June 2022, researchers at the Canadian University of Sherbrooke disclosed that this illegal residential proxy service enticed possible victims by providing free VPN services in exchange for the installation of malware intended to add their IP addresses to the 911 S5 botnet.
Approximately 120,000 home proxy nodes from all over the world were under the control of the botnet at the time, and they were all in communication with many command-and-control servers that were either hosted on cloud servers or offshore.
