Last week, a Chinese national was taken into custody in Milan, Italy, on suspicion of having ties to the state-sponsored hacker collective Silk Typhoon, which has been involved for cyberattacks against government and business institutions in the United States.
Italian media outlet ANSA reports that Xu Zewei, 33, was detained on July 3rd at Milan’s Malpensa Airport upon his arrival on a flight from China. The individual was taken into custody by Italian police based on a U.S. government international warrant.
According to ANSA, Xu is charged with having ties to the Silk Typhoon hacker group, also known as Hafnium, which is supported by the Chinese government and has carried out numerous cyberespionage strikes against the United States and other nations.
