France’s competition watchdog has fined Apple €150 million ($162 million) for implementing its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) privacy framework.
According to the Autorité de la concurrence, Apple will be penalized financially for exploiting its position as the leading distributor of mobile software for iOS and iPadOS devices from April 26, 2021, until July 25, 2023.
With iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, and tvOS 14.5, the iPhone manufacturer introduced ATT, a framework that mandates that mobile apps obtain users’ express consent before accessing their device’s unique advertising identifier (also known as the Identifier for Advertisers, or IDFA) and tracking them across apps and websites for targeted advertising purposes.
