Two Australian nationals who were born in Russia have been detained and charged with espionage for Russia as part of the “complex” BURGAZADA law enforcement investigation.
This includes the 40-year-old wife of an Army Private in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and her 62-year-old self-employed laborer husband. According to media sources, they were Kira and Igor Korolev, respectively, and had lived in Australia for more than ten years.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced in a statement that the married pair was taken into custody on July 11, 2024, at their residence in the Everton Park neighborhood of Brisbane. Each of them faces a single count of planning to commit an espionage offense, which is punishable by up to 15 years in jail.
