On the official Google Play Store for Android, cybersecurity researchers have found fraudulent apps that pretended to provide call records for any phone number in order to deceive users into signing up for a subscription that resulted in false data and financial loss.
Before being removed from the official app storefront, the 28 apps had received over 7.3 million downloads in total, with one of them having had over 3 million downloads.The Slovakian cybersecurity firm ESET nicknamed the activity CallPhantom, which was mostly directed at Android users in India and the larger Asia-Pacific area.
