FTC Bans InMarket for Selling Precise User Location Without Consent

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the United States is exerting further pressure on data brokers by forbidding InMarket Media from offering for sale or license any precise location data.

Part of the settlement relates to claims that the Texas-based business used customers’ location data for marketing and advertising without first notifying them or getting their permission.

“InMarket will also be prohibited from selling, licensing, transferring, or sharing any product or service that categorizes or targets consumers based on sensitive location data,” the Federal Trade Commission stated last week.
