Google has initiated legal action to dismantle “Lighthouse,” a phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) platform utilized by cybercriminals globally to acquire credit card details via SMS phishing (“smishing”) attacks that pose as the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and E-ZPass toll systems.
The lawsuit seeks to dismantle the website infrastructure that supports Lighthouse phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS), which Google claims has impacted more than 1 million victims in 120 countries. Between July 2023 and October 2024, it is estimated that these kinds of scams have resulted in the theft of up to 115 million payment cards in the U.S. alone.
Google’s lawsuit has accused the Lighthouse platform under various federal racketeering and fraud laws, including the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, Lanham Act, and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
