Iranian-affiliated threat actors were able to gain access to U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Kash Patel’s personal email account and post a cache of images and other data online.
Patel’s name will now appear on the list of successfully hacked victims, according to the website of the hacking group Handala Hack Team. The FBI acknowledged that Patel’s emails had been targeted and stated that the appropriate actions had been taken to “mitigate potential risks associated with this activity” in a statement provided to Reuters.
The disclosed data, according to the agency, is “historical in nature and involves no government information.” Emails purportedly sent by Patel between 2010 and 2019 are included in the leak.
