To safeguard senior citizens who may be the subject of tech support scams or unpaid money fraud, Japanese police planted fictitious payment cards in convenience stores.
The Echizen Police of Fukui prefecture in Japan designed the cards, which have the labels “Virus Trojan Horse Removal Payment Card” and “Unpaid Bill Late Fee Payment Card,” as a warning system.
Their goal is to alert elderly victims who are being tricked into paying with a credit card.
The Fukui prefecture lost around $7.5 million in revenue as a result of many types of internet fraud last year. 14 complaints of investment frauds were received in January 2024, with an estimated $700,000 in damages.
