Information has surfaced regarding a “massive ad fraud operation” that uses hundreds of Google Play Store apps for various illicit purposes.
As a result of the campaign’s misuse of a mobile advertising software development kit (SDK) connected to the CaramelAds ad network, which is based in Russia, Konfety—the Russian term for candy—has been assigned to it.
As to a technical analysis published with The Hacker News by HUMAN’s Satori Threat Intelligence Team, “Konfety represents a new form of fraud and obfuscation, in which threat actors operate ‘evil twin’ versions of ‘decoy twin’ apps available on major marketplaces.”
