Executives of Russian companies are being targeted by a new Android malware that was developed by Russia’s Federal Security Services agency (FSB) and masquerades as an antivirus program.
Researchers identify the new spyware as ‘Android.Backdoor.916.origin,’ but they don’t uncover any connections to established malware families, according to a recent study from the Russian mobile security company Dr. Web.
The malware can, among other things, employ a keylogger to record user input, stream from the phone’s camera, eavesdrop on chats, and steal communication data from messenger apps.
According to Dr. Web, the malware has sampled several later variants since its original discovery in January 2025, suggesting ongoing development.
The experts think it was created for targeted assaults on Russian companies because of the distribution lures, infection techniques, and the fact that its interface read more about New Android malware poses as antivirus from Russian intelligence agency.
