The founder and administrator of the Ransom Cartel ransomware operation, Maksim Silnikau, was given a 16-year prison sentence for his involvement in ransomware operations against at least 18 businesses throughout the globe.
The 40-year-old Belarusian national was sentenced for conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft, according to a statement released today by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Silnikau has been active on Russian-speaking cybercrime forums since at least 2005, according to the DOJ, using the names “J.P. Morgan,” “xxx,” and “lansky.”
Between 2011 and 2016, he was also a member of the Direct Connection cybercrime website, which was shut down after its administrator was arrested.
