As part of a "cross-industry effort" to replace traditional SMS with a more secure alternative, Apple formally introduced iOS 26.5 on Monday, which supports end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to Rich Communication Services (RCS) in beta. In order to achieve this, E2EE RCS messaging is being made available to Android users using the most recent version of Google Messages and iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with compatible carriers. Google announced on Thursday that over 10 billion alleged fraudulent calls and messages are prevented each month by the scam defenses integrated into Android, protecting customers worldwide. According to the IT giant, it has also prevented scams before they are even issued by blocking more than 100 million suspicious numbers from using Rich Communication Services (RCS), an advancement of the SMS protocol.
